Institute of Neurobiology investigators were awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) program (PI: Dr. Mark W. Miller, Co-PI: Dr. Manuel Díaz-Ríos).  The grant, entitled Acquisition of a Shared Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope at the Institute of Neurobiology will provide the NeuroImaging Core with state-of-the-art instrumentation.
 

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO. The RCMI Program is pleased to announce that Joshua Rosenthal, Ph.D., from the Institute of Neurobiology at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus, teamed up with Gail Mandel, Ph.D., John Adelman, Ph.D., and Paul Brehm, Ph.D., from the Vollum Institute at the Oregon Health & Science University, to obtain one of ten NIH Transformative Research Awards.   Their High Risk-High Reward project will develop novel strategies to recode molecules to repair mutations in faulty genes.

Maria Fernanda Montiel-Gonzalez, a Ph.D. Student in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus published an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. See (http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/10/08/1306243110 ).

Marla Rivera Oliver was selected to present a highlighted poster at the National IDeA Symposium of Biomedical Research Excellence (NISBRE) in Washington DC (June 16-18, 2014).  He poster, entitled "Caffeine Stimulates Locomotor Behavior in the Mammalian Spinal Cord" was presented in collaboration with her mentor, Dr. Manuel Díaz-Ríos.

Dr. Guillermo Yudowski received notification of a five year grant from the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA).  The grant will fund the work of Dr. Yudowski's lab (photo) on Endocytic Mechanisms Controlling Functional Selectivity of the CB1 Receptor.

The poster of Lee Vaasjo entitled "Identified Aminergic Neurons in Biomphalaria glabrata, an Intermediate Host for Human Intestinal Schistosomiasis" was selected as the "Outstanding Poster" at the 23rd Annual Puerto Rico Neuroscience Conference held at Interamericana University, Bayamón Puerto Rico, December 6, 2014.  Poster coauthors were Nadia Delgado, Solymar Rolón Martínez, and Dr. Mark W. Miller.  Lee received a certificate and an Apple iPad in recognition of the selection.
