Maria Fernanda Montiel-Gonzalez, a Ph.D. Student in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus published an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. See (http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/10/08/1306243110 ).

Maria Fernanda’s investigation was conducted in the laboratory of her Ph.D. advisor, Dr. Joshua Rosenthal, at the Institute of Neurobiology. “The publication has received national attention and was highlighted by the New England Journal of Medicine as a significant step toward making a reality the repair of specific mistakes in the protein-making machinery of patients using nanomachines” said Dr. Rosenthal, praising the talent of his doctoral student and the benefits of collaborative research.

Institute of Neurobiology graduate student Maria Fernanda Montiel-González discussed the nuances of RNA editing with Dr. Robert Reenan, Professor of Biology, Department of Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, and Biochemistry, Brown University. Their meeting followed Dr. Reenan’s seminar “The Very Different Roles of RNA Editing in Regulating Gene Activity”. Institute of Neurobiology, February 5, 2014. Sponsored by the NIH NIGMS COBRE Puerto Rico Center for Neuroplasticity, the CREST Puerto Rico Center for Environmental Neuroscience (PRCEN), and the Translational Neuroscience Program (TNP) of the UPR Medical Sciences Campus RCMI program.
